Gabrielsen was awarded the title of Commandant of the Order of St. Olav in 2005. Gabrielsen is married and has four kids.

In 2007, Tor Øystein Vaaland, former leader of the Norwegian Council for Mental Health, published the book Brev til en minister (Letters to a Minister) based on private letters Gabrielsen received while he served as Minister of Health, with a focus on letters from people with psychiatric problems or drug addiction. The book was published in 205,000 copies and distributed to Norwegian healthcare workers.

In 2014 was elected as chairman of the board at CSAM Health.

Gabrielsen has been elected into the Parliament of Norway from Vest-Agder in

1993. He was re-elected on two occasions following both in 2001 and 1997. In 2001, Gabrielsen was named the Minister for Trade and Industry as a part of Bondevik’s second cabinet. After the cabinet’s reshuffle of 2004, he was appointed the Minister for Health and Care Services. When Gabrielsen was a cabinet minister, his place in the parliament was filled by Peter Skovholt Gitmark. The Second Cabinet of Bondevik fell after the elections of 2005.

Gabrielsen was a mover from Lindesnes when he was elected in 1993. He then settled in Osteras. He also maintained his residence address in Spangereid the district that he was a constituent of. At the time of his cabinet term it was reported that he was living aboard a yacht in Aker Brygge in Oslo. In 2007, he was a candidate for re-election for the municipality of Lindesnes and was awarded the seat. But, when it was revealed that he’d just bought an apartment located in Oslo the city, he was required to give up his seat.

Gabrielsen started his own consultant company in 2006. In 2007 he became chairman of the Special Olympics and the Norwegian Council for Mental Health.
