In the years prior to the 1976 Summer Olympics the attention of everyone was not focused on Richter however, but rather her fellow Dortmunder Inge Helten she had set a global record at 11.04 before the Games. Richter beat the reigning champion Renate Stecher from East Germany in the first round, then ran 11.05 during the 2nd round, and then established a record for the world at 11.01 in the semi-finals. The final was a close race, Richter, Stecher and Helten completed within one centimetre of one another and Richter winning the gold medal and defeating Stecher. A few days later, she won an Silver medal for the 200m and another in the relay 4×100 meters, getting beaten by East Germany this time.
In 1974, at the European Championships in Rome she was a part of Italy’s 4×100 m relay team, this time taking home the gold medal. She placed fourth in the 100m final.

Born Annegret Irrgang in the year 1971, she took home her first international championship during the 1971 European Championships, as a part of the 4×100 relay team. In the following year, at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich she came 5th in the 100m to the delight of her own home crowd. Because she had been married to sprinter Manfred Richter, she now was a runner under the name. As part of the relay team, Richter set a new record in the world, beating the rivals of East Germany for the gold.
She won the 60-meter award during the European Indoor Championships in 1973. After winning a bronze in 1971, and the silver medal during 1972 (over 50m).
Richter ran the 3rd leg of the winning relay squad at the first World Cup of Track and Field in 1977, she had the second fastest time of the year for the 100 meters of 11.03. She would finish 3rd in the 100 meters and 4th in the 200 meters at the second World Cup in 1979, again running the 3rd leg of the victorious European relay squad, and retired after the boycott of the 1980 Moscow games. During her career she won 28 national titles. Her daughter Daniela and son Marcus also competed in athletics, at the national level.
