In 2004, Lauvergeon resisted a request from Nicolas Sarkozy, then finance minister, to help bail out French transport and energy company Alstom. When Alstom’s leadership announced plans in 2008 to create a heavy-engineering conglomerate by combining Alstom and Areva in a single entity, Lauvergeon reiterated her opposition.
As of 1995 Lauvergeon was recruited into the bank sector, becoming a managing partner at Lazard and was the sole female partner of the company. While working at Lazard she was a part-time employee for some time at Lazard’s investment banking New York office. In the latter part of 1996, she resigned from the company following a dispute with Edouard Stern and, according to reports in the media in the period, Stern had particularly taken off an invitation Lauvergeon was given to join the board of directors of French aluminum firm Pechiney.

Lauvergeon was a student at the Ecole normale des jeunes filles, where she was able to pass the Agregation test in Physics. After that, she joined into the Corps des Mines. In 1983, she was enrolled in her first training course in the Corps de Mines, in the steel and iron industry located at Usinor. From 1985 until 1988, Lauvergeon was part of l’Inspection generale des carrieres (IGC). In July 2001, she merged Cogema, Framatome and other companies to create Areva. At the head of the new company, she became a member the small circle of women directing international corporations; in September 2002, daily economic newspaper Les Échos uncovered a report from the French Court of Auditors, citing Lauvergeon’s compensation (salary of €305,000 with bonus of €122,000) and “golden parachute” of two years’ wages.
