In 2013, she was named Professor and Director of the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge and became the seventh Arthur Balfour Professor of Genetics in the year 2015. Her work continues to create connections between DNA sequences, epigenetic changes and gene regulation, as well as their effect on phenotypes; and the mechanisms and consequences that epigenetic inheritance can have.

Ferguson-Smith was appointed as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2002. She was granted EMBO Membership in 2006 and named as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2017.

Ferguson-Smith was a postdoctoral researcher alongside Azim Surani, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge from 1989 until 1994. She started molecular research on genomic imprinting. This is the process that allows genes to express in accordance with their parent source. The team discovered an early discovery of exogenous imprinted genes, and proved that the process was epigenetically controlled via DNA methylation.
