Thomas was a speedy all-round skater, however she preferred the shorter distances. The year 1995 and 1996 had her at her peak; during both years Thomas was Dutch allround champion, as also Dutch sprint champion. She also came second in the European Allround Championships behind Gunda Niemann. She finished third at 1995’s World Allround Championships in Savalen and, in 1996, she won the 1500 and 1000 m at the very first World Single Distance Championships in Hamar.
On the 20th of March, 1999 at Calgary’s Olympic Oval in Calgary, she broke the world record for 1500 meters. with 1.5 seconds, skating 1.55.50. In the same weekend, she broke the record set by the world record for total times of 500 1000, 1500, and 3000 m in a single competition (the “mini combination”) and finished 4th in the adelskalender.
