Ewing is an active participant in Shelter as well as Amnesty International. Ewing has participated in variety of campaigns in Parliament, including advocating on behalf of Hepatitis C sufferers and attempting to get an open inquiry into the incidents that took place at Princess Royal Barracks, Deepcut and where James Collinson, a constituent was killed on the 23rd of March 2002.
She sought to become SNP candidate for Moray in the 27 April 2006 Scottish Parliament by-election to succeed her late sister-in-law, Margaret Ewing. She was defeated by North East Scotland MSP Richard Lochhead who went on to win the seat in the by-election.
She was later selected to contest the Falkirk East seat in the 2007 election on behalf of the SNP as a replacement for the previously selected candidate, the late Douglas Henderson. On 3 May 2007 she achieved a 9% swing from Labour to the SNP in Falkirk East, however this was not enough to displace the incumbent Cathy Peattie.
It was 2001 when Ewing was a candidate for UK Parliament again, this time in Perth in Perth, in the city where Roseanna Cunningham was the MP. Ewing was elected after defeating the Conservative candidate with just 48 votes, which was the lowest percentage of votes in Scotland. In the election of 2005 in the wake of a boundary revision Ewing contested the new electoral district that included Ochil as well as South Perthshire, losing to the Labour party candidate, Gordon Banks.

Annabelle Janet Ewing (born 20 August 1960) is an Scottish lawyer, politician and ex-Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs in the Scottish Government. The minister is also one of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Cowdenbeath constituency. She was minister for Youth and Women’s Employment 2014-16. She was a former member of the Scottish Parliament from Perth 2001-2005, and was also a an MP in the Scottish Parliament for Mid Scotland and Fife between 2011 between 2011 and 2016.
Ewing was initially picked as an SNP campaigner for UK Parliament to contest a by-election in Hamilton South in 1999, the seat where her mother won a storied by-election in 1967. Labour won a majority at the time of the 1997 election, and despite an increase of 16% in favour of an SNP in 1999 in the seat, Labour’s Bill Tynan won the seat.
She is famed due to an incident that occurred on 16 December 2004, whereby the Deputy Speaker removed her from the House as she refused to apologise for calling the then Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon a “back-stabbing coward” during exchanges over Geoff Hoon’s plans to merge Scottish Regiments, including the Black Watch.
