Reunification brought her into full-time political work. In June 1991, she was part of the Regional Parliament (“Landtag”) and was given the seat that was made available following due to the departure of fellow party member Helmut Tehiel [de] . In the Assembly she was a member from the years 1999-2006 as the chair for the Left (party) group taking over from Caterina Muth after she had resigned due to bizarre circumstances, including the theft of a shopping bag. Gramkow was the party’s spokesperson within the assembly on trade unions as well as finance and budget policies In 2006, the party added policies on women to the agenda.

She was raised within Germany in the German Democratic Republic and remained faithful to the successors to the previous party that was in power East German Socialist Unity Party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands/ SED) following 1989. She was elected to the office of “High Mayor” (“Oberburgermeisterin”) of Schwerin in 2008: she intends to stand for re- election in 2016.

Angelika Gramkow was born in Grevesmuhlen which is a town of a modest size situated just West from Rostock as well, and at the at the time, only a small distance from the East from the “internal” frontier that separated East Germany from the more economically active Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). In the years 1965-75,, she went to in the Polytechnic Secondary School (“zehnklassige Polytechnische Oberschule) located in Ludwigslust. In 1978 she had joined East Germany’s ruling Socialist Unity Party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands / SED). In 1981, Gramkow began working as a member of the Schwerin regional leadership team (“Kreisleitung”) of the Free German Youth (” Freie Deutsche Jugend” (also known as FDJ) The group that is the party’s youth arm and traditionally a pathway to political positions and influence. Following her graduation, She taught on in the Schwerin location at the Gotha Academy for Economics and Finance. After that, she was transferred to teach at the Vocational Academy for Economics and Management located in Schwerin. She remained in the post until January 1992.

In 2008 she was elected “Oberbürgermeisterin” (“Lord mayor”) of Schwerin. Commentators found the achievement of her election more than averagely remarkable because since the restoration of democracy in 1989, the party of which she is a member, Die Linke, has seldom achieved much more than 20% of the votes in local elections. However, her education in economics and finance, coupled with a reputation for financial competence, gained during her time in the regional Regional parliament (“Landtag”), and her good local connections, were believed to have served her well at a time when local government coffers were bare. She was also helped by the circumstances and scale of her predecessor’s defeat: the CDU (centre-right) Norbert Claussen [de] Lord Mayor was rejected by 82.7% of those voting, having been discredited by the death of a five year old child in her parents’ home (the “Lea-Sophie affair”) and his subsequent attempts to down-play the tragedy and alleged failure of co- ordination between and within the local government departments that it was said to have highlighted.
