She then became an official part of the Blair government following the general election in 1997 in the position of Parliamentary Under Secretary for State in the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, transitioning in 1998 to the Department of Social Security in 1998.
Eagle was joined in the House of Commons at the 1997 general election by her twin sister, Maria Eagle. The Eagles are one of two pairs of sisters in the Commons, as of 2017. They are identical twins.
Following the 2001 general election, she was a junior minister at the Home Office but was sacked by Blair in 2002, reportedly in error. She was a member of the Treasury Select Committee after January 2003.
Eagle was elected for the first time to the House of Representatives as a member for Wallasey at the time of the elections in 1992. She lost with 3,809 votes Conservative minister in charge of Overseas Development at the Foreign Office Lynda Chalker. There were allegations of irregularities in her selection of a parliamentarian, such as the exclusion of a popular local candidate on the shortlist of candidates and the count of votes itself.

Eagle was born in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire The daughters of Shirley (Kirk) and her husband, an industrial worker, and Andre Eagle, a print worker. Her education was at St. Peter’s C of E Primary School as well as Formby High School. She studied Philosophy as well as Economics, Politics, and Philosophy during her time at St John’s College in Oxford and graduated from Oxford University with the second-class bachelor of Arts degree in 1983. While at Oxford she was the chairwoman for the Oxford University Fabian Society during the years 1980-83. in 1976 Eagle won the joint title of British Girls’ Under-18 chess championship.
In 1984, she worked as an economic director of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) prior to becoming a member of the Confederation of Health Service Employees (COHSE) trade union in which she was in a variety of post. In 1989, she was appointed secretary of the Constituency Labour Party in Peckham for two years starting in 1989.
Eagle is a lesbian, coming out in a newspaper interview in September 1997. She is the second openly lesbian MP, after Maureen Colquhoun in the 1970s. In September 2008, Eagle entered into a civil partnership with Maria Exall who is also involved in the Labour Party through the National Committee. She was ranked 53rd in The Independent’ s “Pink List” for 2006 of the 101 most influential gays and lesbians in Britain.
