Ang Cui is one of the most popular and richest Researcher who was born on February 7, 1983 in Beijing, China. In 2011 Cui was part of a study within Columbia University, directed by Professor Salvatore Stolfo, to examine security weaknesses within HP LaserJet printers. The research team discovered chers that had announced serious security flaws in the printers, which could open the door to carry out a variety of remote attacks, such as creating a fire risk through the force of forcing the fuser to constantly heat up.
Cui was previously an investigator at the Columbia University’s Intrusion Detection Systems Lab where was working while pursuing his Ph.D. within computer science from Columbia University. The dissertation he wrote for his doctoral degree “Embedded System Security: A Software-Based Approach,” was focused on the scientific research of security and exploitation for embedded devices. Cui earned the Ph.D. in the year 2015 and established Red Balloon Security to commercialize the technology for protecting firmware, which is which is now known as Symbiote.
In 2016, Popular Science named Symbiote one of the “9 Most Important Security Innovations of the Year.”
At the 2017 REcon security conference, Cui and security researcher Rick Housley demonstrated a new method for hacking processors through the use of an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP.
HP released a firmware patch shortly after the discoveries were made public. The team has claimed that they discovered 201 compromised HP laserjet printers on the U.S. Department of Defense’s network, and two HP headquarters printers after the security patch issued. The year 2015 saw HP granted Cui’s Symbiote technology to implement an in-frastructure defense against cyber attacks on the LaserJet Enterprise printers and multifunction printers.

On the 29th Chaos Communication Congress in December 2012, Cui and Solfo presented the results of their DARPA funded research study that revealed a flaw within Cisco IP phones (CiscoUnified IP Phone 7900 series) that allows an attacker to transform these phones into devices that are bugging. The vulnerability allowed permission to root the firmware on the device which allows for the eavesdropping of calls. This could also permit attackers to remotely activate the phone’s microphone to listen in on conversations.
In the 2014 Black Hat Briefings cybersecurity conference, Cui unveiled a firmware vulnerability dubbed “Funtenna” which manipulates the electronic functions of typical devices such as printers washing machines, phones and other devices in order to generate radio signals that can be used to transmit information outside of an encrypted facility. It could also operate on devices in an air-gapped device.
At the DEF CON 24 security conference in 2016, Cui, along with his principal scientist Jatin Kataria and security researcher Francois Charbonneau, demonstrated previously unknown vulnerabilities in the firmware of widely used computer monitors, which an attacker could exploit to both spy on the user’s screen activity and to manipulate what the user sees and engages with on the screen.

The vulnerability affects a key hardware security component developed by Cisco known as the Trust Anchor module (TAm). The vulnerability is considered significant, as TAm underpins the secure boot process in numerous Cisco devices, including routers and switches. As WIRED Magazine explained in its reporting on the Thrangrycat vulnerability: “Known as the Trust Anchor, this Cisco security feature has been implemented in almost all of the company’s enterprise devices since 2013. The fact that the researchers have demonstrated a way to bypass it in one device indicates that it may be possible, with device-specific modifications, to defeat the Trust Anchor on hundreds of millions of Cisco units around the world. That includes everything from enterprise routers to network switches to firewalls.”
Facts & Trivia
Ang Ranked on the list of most popular Researcher. Also ranked in the elit list of famous people born in China. Ang Cui celebrates birthday on February 7 of every year.
Known as electromagnetic fault injection (EMFI), this class of attacks has been investigated before, but Cui and Housley’s new technique, known as “BadFET,” is adapted to exploit modern computers and embedded devices, by impacting multiple components within these devices at the same time. By using a 300 volt EMP pulse from 3 millimeters away, the BadFET attack bypasses the Secure Boot protection that keeps processors from running untrusted code.
