Finkelstein’s expertise is in the fields of public health economics and finance with a particular focus in health insurance. She conducts research on the failures of markets and interventions by the government in the insurance market, as well as the effects of government policy on health care as well as health insurance. Along together with Katherine Baicker, she is one of the two principal investigators in the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment, an evaluation that is randomized of the effect in expanding Medicaid to people with low incomes. Her research has proven that newly-enrolled Medicaid patients are more likely to make trips in general to healthcare providers following the acquisition of insurance, have more trips to emergency rooms, and also benefit financially from insurance, in addition to other results. in 2008 Finkelstein received her the Elaine Bennett Research Prize by the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) in recognition of her contribution to the economy profession. She was awarded the award in 2012. received the John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association. The award recognized her work in the context of “a model of how theory and empirics can be combined in creative ways”.
