After the failure of her first Bollywood film, Puri appeared opposite Kunal Khemu in Vishal Mahadkar’s directorial debut—the crime thriller Blood Money (2012)—in which she portrayed the wife of Khemu’s character. The film received mixed response from critics who watched it, and had a worldwide gross of ₹ 120 million (US$1.7 million) on a budget of ₹ 90 million (US$1.3 million), thus becoming an “average grosser”. Puri next appeared in Abhishek Kapoor’s buddy drama Kai Po Che! (2013) alongside Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Rajkummar Rao. An adaptation of the novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life, she was cast as Vidya Bhatt, a district level cricketer’s younger sister who falls in love with his best friend. The film proved to be a critical and commercial success with earnings of over ₹ 900 million (US$13 million) in worldwide ticket sales.
