Amon Miyamoto (Gong Ben Ya Men born on January 4 1958, in Tokyo) is an Japanese director of operas, musicals, plays, kabuki and noh and various art forms. He has directed more than 120 shows (incl. revival productions) all over the world.

In 2004 Miyamoto was his first Asian director in the history of Broadway for his production of Pacific Overtures which received four Tony Award nominations. The year 2008 saw him wrote and directed Up in the Air, an original musical written by Henry Krieger, which premiered at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Other international credits include: Tan Dun’s Opera TEA: A Mirror of Soul at The Santa Fe Opera in 2007; The Opera Company of Philadelphia in 2010 in 2010 and the Vancouver Opera in May 2013; The Fantasticks in London’s West End at the Duchess Theatre in June 2010, The Temple of The Golden Pavilion which is a musical inspired by the novel written by Yukio Mishima, was accepted to the Lincoln Center Festival in NY in July 2011. the Mozart opera DI ZAUBERFLOTE (The Magic Flute) at the Landestheater Linz in Austria in September of 2013; internationally famous Japanese Taiko Drumming Group Drumming TAO’s Drum Heart at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York in February 2016; the world’s first 3D live noh theater YUGEN: The Hidden Beauty of Japan in Singapore in October of 2016; the reading performance of the play Fanatic Artist Hokusai which is a unique fiction-based play that is that is based on the life of the ukiyo-e artist Hokusai in the British Museum in London in July 2017, and the opera The Temple of The Golden Pavilion which is which is based on the novel written by Yukio Mishima at the Opera National of du Rhin at Strasbourg as well as Mulhouse, France in March/April 2018. In October 2018, he directed the world premiere production of Ikiru (Music by Jason Howland, Book & Lyrics by Chikae Takahashi), a new musical based on legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece, in Tokyo.

In 2019, he will direct the play Fanatic Artist Hokusai in January, the opera The Temple of the Golden Pavilion in February, and the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in March.

Starting his career in theatre as a choreographer and actor, Amon Miyamoto studied in London and New York for two years. After returning back to Japan in 1987 when he directed his debut with his show, I Got Merman, winning the National Performing Arts Festival Award which is the most prestigious stage honor in Japan.
