Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on October 17, 1959 in Surinam, Mauritius, Savanne District, Mauritius. Bibi Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim was born into Surinam, the city of Surinam on the 17th of October, 1959, the daughter of Hassenjee Gurib as well as Firdaus Durgauhee. She was raised within Plaine Magnien and completed her studies at the primary school in Saint-Patrice. After that, she went into Mahebourg Loreto Convent, finishing her Higher School Certificate at Loreto convent Quatre Bornes before relocating to England to pursue her undergraduate degree in Chemistry. Her graduation from University of Surrey in 1983 with the BSc degree in Chemistry. Following the PhD diploma in organic chemistry from Exeter University, she returned home in 1987 and took an appointment as a lecturer at University of Mauritius. Gurib-Fakim is also awarded various international awards, including the L ’Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science (2007) as well as the Laureate Award for the National Economic and Social Council (2007) and the CTA / NEPAD / AGRA / RUFORUM for “African Women in Science” in addition to the African Union Award for Women in Science. She was also appointed Commandant of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (CSK) by President Anerood Jugnauth in 2008 for her contributions to sciences and education. She was awarded the title of the ‘Chevalier de L’Ordre of Palmes Academiques in 2009 by the Government of France in 2009. When she became the President of France, she received immediately promoted to the top civilian honour that is the title of Grand Commandant of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GSCK).

In December 2013 Dr. Gurib-Fakim made a complaint to the Mauritian Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) alleging religious discrimination in the consideration of her application for Vice Chancellor of the University of Mauritius (UoM). The EOC investigation found that this was not the case, but noted shortcomings in the selection process. The report cited the lack of clear criteria and mark sheets for evaluating candidates. She was the the Managing Director of CIDP Research and Research and Innovation (formerly Cephyr, Centre for Phytotherapy Research). Prior to that she was a Professor with a private chair on Organic Chemistry at the University of Mauritius (2001) and in the past, she was Dean for the Faculty of Science and Pro-Vice Chancellor (2004-2010). She also worked for the Mauritius Research Council as Manager for Research (1995-1997). She was the Chairperson of for the International Council for Scientific Union (ICSI) – Regional Office for Africa (2011-2014). Her proposal for the presidency of Mauritius was proposed by the then-PM and colleague Militant Socialist Movement member Anerood Jugnauth, was unanimously accepted in Mauritian National Assembly.
