In the group stage, the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics posted wins against Brazil, Great Britain, and the Netherlands, but lost to the Canada. This was enough to advance the Gliders to the quarter- finals, where they beat Mexico. The Gliders then defeated the United States by a point to set up a final clash with Germany. The Gliders lost 44–58, and earned a silver medal.

The girl was born in England, Merritt moved to Australia when she was 10 years old. She was initially an athlete, but was invited to basketball by Paralympic Hall of Fame coach Frank Ponta in 2007. She began playing the highest level of professional wheelchair basketball Australia with the Perth Western Stars in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) in the year 2008. 2013 was the year that she was captain of the team, leading it went on to win their debut WNWBL championship. It was her league’s best scoring player and also the Most Valuable Player 4 pointer in the league’s All Star Five, in 2012 and 2011.

She competed at the 2012 Gliders and Rollers World Challenge in Sydney, scoring the winning points in the first place match against the Germany women’s national wheelchair basketball team, and was named the women’s MVP for the competition, having averaged 17.8 points per game.
