Kennedy, originally from Indianapolis, joined the socialist movement of 1973 in Louisville, Kentucky. She has worked in coal mining in Alabama, Colorado and Utah as well as West Virginia. She is currently employed at Walmart in Dallas.
She ran for the SWP seat as Cleveland’s mayor against Ralph Perk in 1977. She received 1,225 votes but lost to Dennis Kucinich by a large margin. In 1981, she joined the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). She was also involved in litigation and one of the leaders of a strike that occurred in Utah 2004. She ran for the United States Senate in 2000 as a certified writer-in candidate, following the death of Mel Carnahan, former Governor of Missouri.
In February 2020, Kennedy was announced as her party’s nominee for President. Her vice-presidential nominee is Malcolm Jarrett, an African-American activist and cook from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The two kicked off their campaign with speeches at campaign headquarters in Dallas on February 8.
