Powell recalls being inspired at the age of 14 by a recording of William Warfield singing Porgy in George Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess. “I’d never seen a black person in classical music. It was the right thing for me. He said that he had promised to sing it one day. He graduated from Northampton High School in 1974. After hearing about it through his high school chorus teacher, he went on a musical tour to Europe in the next year.

After graduating from the University of Maryland with a voice degree, Powell joined U.S. Army Chorus in 1983. He was granted permission to travel to Australia in 2004 to play the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess productions in Melbourne and Sydney. Powell was a staff sergeant at that time. He described himself as an ordinary soldier. We are taught how to march, drill, and carry a gun. He said that the difference is that they are available 24 hours a days to perform at VIP functions. He quit the chorus in 1993, and he sang for many years around the globe before rejoining the chorus in 2001.

In 2015, Powell was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama. George Shirley was also awarded the medal that year.
