Alonzo Highsmith is one of the most popular and richest American boxer who was born on February 26, 1965 in Bartow, Florida, United States. Alonzo Walter, Sr., a former fullback and ex-boxer, is an American football executive. Most recently, he was the vice president of player staff for the Cleveland Browns (NFL). Highsmith was previously a senior personnel executive at the Green Bay Packers for six seasons. Highsmith is also an American football fullback, professional boxer, and played in the NFL with the Houston Oilers and Dallas Cowboys. He played college football for the University of Miami.
Jimmy Johnson was named the new head coach in 1984. He rushed for 906 yards and 11 touchdowns on 146 carries (6.2 per cent). He would become a fullback who could block, catch, and run.
In 1988, he started 16 games, rushing for 466 yards (third on the team) on 94 carries for a 5-yard average, while developing into one of the best blocking fullbacks in the NFL. In 1989, he started again 16 games, led the team in rushing with 531 yards and was second on the team with 6 total touchdowns.
Although he had started 40 straight games with the Houston Oilers, he had a series of offseason knee surgeries, that had doctors recommending against the Dallas Cowboys acquiring him in 1990, based on a knee condition that could potentially end his career. Head coach Jimmy Johnson, knowing Highsmith from his playing days at the University of Miami, ignored the medical advice and went ahead with the proposed trade on September 3.
Highsmith chose to accept a scholarship from University of Miami over Notre Dame University or the University of Michigan. Howard Schnellenberger recruited him to play defensive, but he converted to fullback before the start of his freshman season. He was part of the 1983 Hurricanes team that won the national title. He led the team’s rush during the Orange Bowl victory over Nebraska, 31-30.
