Aliza Sherman (born December 19, 1964), also known as Aliza Sherman Risdahl and Cybergrrl is an entrepreneur in new media, blogger, activist for women’s rights, speaker, author and blogger. Her expertise in networking and online marketing is what makes her famous. Her main focus is on women’s Internet issues. She also empowers women to take part in the development of new media and progressive technology. Newsweek magazine named Sherman one of the “Top 50 Internet People Who Matter Most” in 1995. She was the only woman on this list. Fast Company magazine named her one of the “Most Influential women in technology” in 2009. She hails from Honolulu in Hawaii.

Some chapters started to separate from Webgrls in 1998. In August, the San Francisco Chapter was formed to become San Francisco Women on the Web. The Austin chapter followed suit and created “Her Domain”. The Washington, D.C. Chapter followed suit in April 1999, creating DC Web Women. Nearly one-third of Webgrls’ 30,000 members, mostly from the USA and Canada, had left Webgrls by November 2000 and created a separate organization called DigitalEve. The Internet: A Historical Encyclopedia examines the reasons these chapters and members left Webgrls. Sherman quit Cybergrrl, Inc. in 1999. Cybergrl, Inc., and Webgrls International are managed by Kevin Kennedy, with Nelly Yusupova as the CTO.

Sherman is a member of the American Association of University Women’s Educational Foundation Commission on Technology, Gender, and Teacher Education exploring the technology gender gap in schools culminating in a report called Tech-Savvy: Educating Girls in the New Computer Age (2000). She has served as an advisor to various nonprofit organizations for girls, including GenAustin, hipGuide, College Broadband.

In 2001, Sherman relocated to Cheyenne, Wyoming from New York City, where she worked in public relations for the Wyoming Business Council. She is also one of the founders of the Women’s Internet History Project. She currently resides in Alaska.

Sherman created Cybergrl, Inc. in January 1995. It is the first fully-service Internet company that was owned and operated by a woman. Webgrls International was established two months later. It is the first international women’s network organization. Sherman is well-known for launching three Web sites of general interest for women at Cybergrl.com and Webgrls.com. These sites predate other important women’s Web sites.

She has spoken about issues pertaining to women and the Internet at international conferences and events, including “Technology Conference for Women’s NGOs” at The Hague, Netherlands; “Links Education Technology Conference” in Stockholm, Sweden; “1999 Women Leaders Conference” in Wellington, New Zealand; and “1999 Women’s Summit of the Americas” in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
