She is an Israeli politician and academic. Between 2013 and 2019, she was a member of Knesset for Yesh Atid. She is also a senior lecturer at Bar-Ilan University’s School of Communication. She is an author, journalist, media personality and social activist. Her work is focused on issues of gender and multiculturalism in Judaism as well as Israeli society.

Lavie published A Jewish Woman’s Prayer Book 2005. This collection of prayers draws from many Jewish traditions. The English translation won 2008 National Jewish Book Award (Jewish Book Council) in the United States.

She was placed tenth on the party’s list for the 2015 elections, and was re- elected as the party won 11 seats. Lavie became a member of the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality and head of the Subcommittee on Human Trafficking and Prostitution. She also served on the National Security and Foreign Affairs Committee, the Ethics Committee, and the House Committee and headed the Knesset caucus on religion and state. In July 2015, she was named “Outstanding Member of Knesset” by the Israel Democracy Institute, for her activities in the 19th parliamentary session.

Prior to the April 2019 elections Yesh Atid joined the Blue and White alliance, with Lavie placed 38th on the alliance’s list. She lost her seat as Blue and White won 35 seats.

Lavie was educated at Bar-Ilan University. She received a BA degree in 1988, a MA in 1997, and a PhD 2002. She was a senior lecturer in the School of Communications from 2000 to her election to Knesset 2013. Her doctoral dissertation “Israel Radio and Gender”, (2002) dealt with the topic of current affairs and gender newsreels on public radio. Brandeis University also provided her with a year of research fellowship, where she studied media and gender as well as the cultural role that women play in Judaism.

She was also a member of the Finance committee, the National Security and Foreign Affairs Committee, and the House Committee in the 19th Knesset.
