Saar was born to Betye Saar (a well-known African American sculptor and artist) and Richard Saar (an art conservationist). Saar’s mother Betye was active in the 1970s Black Arts Movement. She took Alison, Lezley, and Tracye to art openings and museums during their childhood. They saw Outsider Art such as Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers, Los Angeles, and Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village, Simi Valley. Saar’s passion for nature, intense interest and admiration of vernacular folk arts and admiration for artists’ ability create beauty using discarded objects stemmed from her childhood and exposure to these types of art. Alison spent eight years working with her father as conservator, beginning in high school. She learned how to carve from her father, and it influenced the materials she used in her work. Alison learned about the properties and techniques of different materials and aesthetics by working with artifacts from various cultures, including Egyptian mummies and Chinese frescoes.

Saar, who had studied with Dr. Samella, received a dual degree from Scripps College in 1978 in art history as well as studio art. Her thesis was about African-American folk art. In 1981, she received her MFA at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Apart from their separate careers, Saar and Betye Saar produced art together. Alison “inherited a fascination for mysticism and found objects from her mother, as well as the spiritual potential of art.”

Saar is a recipient of a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, an Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Artist Fellowship. In 2012, she was named a Fellow of United States Artists.
