Nicholas was part of the European Solheim Cup team from 1990 to 1992. In 2003, she was vice captain. Nicholas was captain of the European Solheim Cup teams in 2009 and 2011.
In 1998, she was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for “services to women’s golf”, and in 2002 became a Life Member of the Ladies European Tour.
At her retirement at the end of the 2004 season, Nicholas had won 12 events on the Ladies European Tour. She topped the European Tour Order of Merit in 1997 and finished in the top-ten fifteen times in 16 seasons between 1985 and 2000. She also won four times on the LPGA Tour, between 1995 and 1999, including winning the U.S. Women’s Open in 1997. In 1992, she won both the Western Australian Open and the Malaysian Open.
Nicholas won the British Women’s Open 1987 when it was recognized as a major championship only by the Ladies European Tour and the 1997 U.S. Women’s Open.

Nicholas was born in Gibraltar. She attended the School of St Mary and St Anne, which is now Abbots Bromley School for Girls. She had a successful amateur career in England. At the age of 17, she began playing golf and won both the 1982 and 1983 Northern Girls Amateur Opens. Nicholas was the 1983 British Amateur Stroke Play Champion. Nicholas won the 1983 Yorkshire Ladies County Championship.
