Alison Bechdel is one of the most popular and richest Cartoonist who was born on September 10, 1960 in Lock Haven, United States. Bechdel was born at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter Helen Augusta Fontana (1933-2013) and Bruce Allen Bechdel (1936-1980). Her family was Roman Catholic. Her father was an Army veteran and was stationed in West Germany. He worked full-time as a high school English teacher and part-time at a funeral home. Her mother was an actress, and a teacher. Both her parents were cartoonists. Bruce “Christian” Bechdel II is her brother. John Bechdel II is her keyboard player. He has played with many bands, including Prong, Fear Factory, Ministry and Killing Joke. Bechdel graduated high school one year earlier and received her A.A. from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in 1979. Oberlin College gave her a 1981 degree in studio art and art history. Her father passed away in 1980. After that, her mother sold her family home in Beech Creek, Pennsylvania. She then moved to Bellefonte with Robert Fenichel, a smaller, more provincial town close to State College.

Dykes to Watch Out for was initially a series of disconnected strips that didn’t have a consistent cast or a serialized storyline. Its structure evolved to focus on a specific group of lesbian characters. Firebrand Books published a compilation of all the strips in 1986. Bechdel, who was living in St. Paul (Minnesota) at the time, introduced Mo, her regular character, and her friends. Dykes to Keep an Eye On is where the “Bechdel Test” was born, which is a widely used metric in cultural discussions about film. She began a page- length strip in 1988 about the staff at a queer newspaper. It was called “Servants to the Cause” and it ran for just a few pages. Bechdel is also an author and illustrator of autobiographical strips, as well as illustrations for magazines and websites. Bechdel was able to quit her job to focus on Dykes to Watch Out for in 1990 because of its success.

Fun Home was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award in the memoir/autobiography category. It also won the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work. Fun Home was also nominated for the Best Graphic Album award, and Bechdel was nominated for Best Writer/Artist.

Time magazine named Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home number one of its “10 Best Books of the Year.” Lev Grossman and Richard LeCayo described Fun Home as “the unlikeliest literary success of 2006,” and called it “a stunning memoir about a girl growing up in a small town with her cryptic, perfectionist dad and slowly realizing that a) she is gay and b) he is too. … Bechdel’s breathtakingly smart commentary duets with eloquent line drawings. Forget genre and sexual orientation: this is a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds, and their mysterious debts to each other.”

Dykes to Watch Out For began as a single drawing, labeled “Marianne dissatisfied by the morning brew: Dykes to Watch Out For plate no. 27”. A friend suggested that she send her work directly to WomaNews. This feminist newspaper published her first work in the June 1983 issue. Bechdel slowly moved from single-panel drawings to multipaneled strips. Dykes to Watch Out For started this process and developed into a series posters and postcards that allowed people to get a glimpse into the urban lesbian community. The strip was eventually sold to other outlets after a year.
