Alireza Firouzja is one of the most popular and richest Chess Player who was born on June 18, 2003 in Babol, Mazandaran Province, Iran. Firouzja participated in the Grenke Chess open, which was held 18-22 April. Firouzja won the first two rounds but refused to face the Israeli FIDE Master Or Bronstein during the third round. Firouzja won with an overall score 18-7. He competed in the French Rapid and Blitz Championships in Le Blanc-Mesnil later in May. He defeated Alberto David to win the rapid event.
Firouzja participated in the Masters section at the Prague International Chess Festival. This is a round-robin event for 10 players. It was Wei Yi’s last chance to attend the festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Firouzja won the tournament after a tie for the first-fifth place on 5/9 against Vidit Gujrathi. This improved on his previous results at TATA Steel, and made him one of the youngest players ever to win a supertournament.
Firouzja won the gold medal in the U12 section at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in 2015. He won the Iranian Chess Championship in 2016. He scored 8/11 points (+5−0=6), a full point ahead of his nearest competitors, and at age 12 became the youngest ever to win the title. Also in 2016, he was awarded the title International Master (IM) by FIDE.
At the 2018 World Rapid Championship held in Saint Petersburg, Firouzja finished sixth in a field of world-class players, behind Daniil Dubov, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Hikaru Nakamura, Vladislav Artemiev and Magnus Carlsen. Starting as the 169th seed in a tournament of 206 participants, Firouzja scored 10/15 (+8−3=4) and a performance rating of 2848, the second-highest in the event behind the winner Dubov. At the World Blitz Championship, he placed 42nd out of 150 with a score of 12/21 (+10−7=4). He led the field by a clear point after 7 rounds with 6½/7, but his form faltered after losing to the eventual winner Carlsen in round 8.
Firouzja met Magnus Carlsen on 15 April in the final of Chess24 Banter Blitz Cup. He won 8 1/2 -7 1/2. Firouzja competed in the Magnus Carlsen Invitational. This rapid tournament was held by Chess24 between 18 April and 3 May. Firouzja was defeated by Carlsen in their match with a score 2 1/2-1 1/2 1/2. Firouzja was sixth overall and did not make it to the four-way playoff.
