Kovaleva was a curler in her hometown of Slantsy during her school years. After graduating from Slantsy, Kovaleva moved to St. Petersburg and joined the Sports School of Olympic Reserve (No. 2. After three years of curling, she was crowned national champion and silver medalist at the 2011 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship with her coach Alexey Tuselousov.
