Pichushkin committed his first homicide on 27 July 1992 when he was 18. The victim was Mikhail Odichuk. They had been classmates, and Pichushkin had invited Odichuk on a killing expedition. Pichuskin had openly told Odichuk that he wanted to kill someone, and suggested they cooperate in the act. Odichuk had tagged along, half in jest, probably not quite sure what to expect. When Pichushkin realized that Odichuk was not serious about killing, he killed Odichuk instead.

Russian media has speculated that Pichushkin was motivated, in part, by a macabre competition with another notorious Russian serial killer, Andrei Chikatilo, the ‘Rostov Ripper’, who was convicted in 1992 of killing 53 children and young women over a 12-year period. Pichushkin has said his aim was to kill 64 people, the number of squares on a chessboard. He later recanted this statement, saying that he would have continued killing indefinitely had he not been stopped.

He lived with his paternal grandfather, whose death sent him into a spiral of alcoholism.

As Pichushkin said, “the fact the victims had disappeared has no longer been able to satisfy me; I needed more emotions”.
